Back to Basics

Presented by: Luis Rodriguez-NASM CPTIn the next few paragraphs I will be explaining the necessity of nutritional cooperation to your exercise lifestyle and program.
1000 years ago there were no microwaves, hormones in our foods, pesticides on our vegetables, and preservatives for our meats. There was the absence of refined grains and an abundance of daily activity. Where do you think we accessed water? The well; with a bucket! And no, it wasn’t in the back yard it was more than likely a few miles away. Meats were consumed typically by kings and royalty. I don’t know about you, but when I think of the royal table pigging out buffet style, I don’t generally picture them with 6-packs! I’m also sure that quick foods weren’t as available either. So…where am I going with this? Convenience and automation has turned society into that gluttonous royal table with high priced fabrics to cover up the disgusting fat surrounding their midsection and thighs.
Where do we start? Well we can start by introducing more nutritious choices into your daily nutritional regimen. Remember what your Mom always told you? ”Eat your fruits and vegetables.” Our “friends” tell us sugar is bad so don’t eat too much fruit…WRONG! Fruit is one of the most vitamin packed foods that any human being can consume. They are high in antioxidants, fiber and their sugar content is composed of fructose, a complex sugar, which is not to be mistaken with the loads of refined white sugar that fat free products and low fat products usually contain. By the way, if it’s fat free and no carbohydrates then what the hell are you putting in your mouth? Actually I know. Let me answer that one, traces of arsenic (rat poison) and formaldehyde (a carcinogenic, cancer causing waste product). Oh yeah and Splenda is a great way to substitute sugar, right! It’s really sugar just one molecule off. It uses a really easy process you see, they chlorinate it to strip an electron out of the outer shell of the molecule (isn’t that the definition of a free radical?) Have you read the warnings on the back of a chlorine container? It usually has a skull and cross-bones! Yikes! Also, a recent double blind study attributed artificial sweeteners to weight gain. So, not only do they taste bad, but they increase FAT while ruining the taste of normal food!
Preservatives and hormones are the next sin in food. Most if not all USDA organic products contain no preservatives or hormones in their foods. What would happen if a woman bearing a child would ingest hormones or bath in insecticides? Yeah you get the point. So why do we accept these products in our food. Go organic! These foods taste better and are more nutritious.
Now let’s talk about ACTIVITY! What would you consider calorie burning activity? We can start by omitting some of our lazy tendencies. Park in the first spot you see not the closest. Take the stairs when possible, I mean really 2nd floor and we need an elevator. Now, have some fun! Think back when you used to have fun outdoors or play sports. Or maybe get some vitamin-D with a nice afternoon speed walk. It doesn’t always have to be on a treadmill in front of a television. Looking and feeling healthy means we have to embrace that lifestyle. Looking for activity and going for that run when the weather is nice and you have the morning off.
Humans used to use muscles more frequently because most occupations were manual labor/activity. Now due to society changes muscles need to be challenged through specific weight training. Weight training will increase your metabolism and strengthen your bones, joints, and muscle tissues, as well as challenge your nervous system and mental stamina. The benefits are ENDLESS!
